Overseas Pakistani Tax Calculator

As a non-resident your foreign salary is not taxed in Pakistan. What is taxed is Pakistan-source income — and what really costs you is buying property while off the Active Taxpayer List.

This is an estimate based on the published salaried slab rates for the tax year selected. It is not tax advice. Your actual liability depends on allowances, tax credits, other sources of income and tax already withheld from you.

Worth knowing

  • Non-resident status depends on days spent in Pakistan in the tax year, not on where you hold a passport or a visa.
  • Remittances sent home through banking channels are not income and are not taxed. They still belong in your wealth statement.
  • You can be on the Active Taxpayer List as a non-resident. Filing a return is what puts you there, and it is what makes the filer property rate available to you.

A calculator works from the figures you give it. Your actual position accounts for allowances, credits, other income and every rupee already withheld from you — which is frequently more than the tax you owe.

Frequently asked questions

I live abroad and pay tax there. Why would I file in Pakistan?

For the rates, mostly. A non-resident who does not file is a non-filer, and a non-filer pays 10.5% advance tax on a property purchase against 1.5% for a filer. On a Rs. 2 crore plot that is Rs. 18 lakh against Rs. 3 lakh. Filing a nil-income return costs a fraction of that.

Is my foreign salary taxed in Pakistan?

Not if you are a non-resident for the tax year. Residency turns on days present in Pakistan. If you cross the threshold you become resident and your foreign income comes into charge, subject to any double-taxation treaty — which is the point at which you should be talking to someone rather than using a calculator.
