How it works

  1. 1

    Send documents on WhatsApp

Photograph your CNIC and utility bill and send them across with your mobile number and email. Two minutes of your time.

  2. 2

    We complete the IRIS enrolment

We file the registration with FBR against your details and deal with any validation the portal throws back.

  3. 3

    You confirm the verification code

FBR texts a code to your registered mobile and emails another. You forward both, this step legally has to be you.

  4. 4

    Certificate and login handed over

You receive your NTN certificate PDF and your IRIS username and password. We change nothing afterwards without telling you.

What an NTN actually gets you

An NTN is simply your identifier in FBR's system. For an individual in Pakistan it is your CNIC number, you are not issued a separate number, you are enrolled so that the number becomes active. What changes is that you now have an IRIS account, you can file returns, and you can begin the process of getting onto the Active Taxpayer List.

This distinction trips people up constantly, so it is worth stating plainly: registering for an NTN does not make you a filer. You become a filer by filing a tax return. Registration opens the door; the return walks you through it. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you half a service.

Do you need one?

You need to be registered if any of the following apply, and in practice most working adults in Lahore hit at least one of them:

  • Your annual taxable salary crosses the exemption threshold
  • You own a business, a shop, or work as a freelancer or consultant
  • You own immovable property above the prescribed size, or a motor vehicle above 1000cc
  • You are buying or selling property and want to avoid the non-filer withholding rate
  • Your employer, a bank or a client has asked you for an NTN certificate

Even where it is not compulsory, the arithmetic usually favours registering. A non-filer pays a higher withholding rate on cash withdrawals, bank profit, dividends, vehicle registration and, the big one, property transactions. On a single property purchase the difference typically dwarfs a decade of filing fees.

What we do differently

Two things. First, we set your profile up properly at registration, correct business activity code, correct address, correct employer details. A sloppy profile is invisible until the day you file a return and IRIS refuses to accept it, and by then it is September and everyone is busy. Second, we hand you your own credentials. Some consultants keep the login and hold your file hostage at renewal time. Your IRIS account is yours; you should be able to log in tonight and look at it.

Then what?

Once you are registered, the next step is filing your return for the current tax year. If you have never filed, you may also want to file the previous year to get onto the ATL sooner, the list is published by FBR on a rolling basis and your name appears once a valid return for the relevant year is on record. If you have missed several years, that is a different job and we handle it separately.

How to verify your NTN and check your ATL status

Once registered, you can confirm your own position without asking anyone. FBR's online verification portal lets you run an NTN inquiry against your CNIC number and see your registration details as the system holds them. Your Active Taxpayer List status is separately checkable: the ATL is published on FBR's website and can be searched by CNIC or NTN, and FBR also operates an SMS check, send ATL [space] your 13-digit CNIC to 9966 and the reply tells you whether you are active. We recommend running both checks after your first return is filed, and again before any property or vehicle transaction, because the withholding agent at the counter will be checking exactly the same list.

Keeping your taxpayer profile up to date, Form 181

Registration is not carved in stone. When you move house, change employer, open a business bank account or start a side business, your FBR registration is updated through a modification application (Form 181) on IRIS. This matters more than it sounds: a mismatch between the address on your NTN certificate and the address on your bank record is a routine cause of rejected account applications, and an outdated employer or business activity on your profile produces validation errors at return-filing time. The update itself is quick; discovering it is needed on 28 September is what makes it painful. If your circumstances have changed since you registered, tell us when you send your return documents and we bring the profile in line at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

How long does NTN registration take?

Usually the same working day if your documents are complete and you respond to the FBR verification codes quickly. Two working days is a realistic outer limit. The delay is almost never on the filing side, it is waiting for the applicant to forward the code FBR texted them.

Is NTN registration free?

FBR charges no government fee for enrolling an individual. What you pay a consultant is a professional fee for doing it correctly and quickly. Anyone quoting you a "government charge" for individual NTN registration is adding something that does not exist.

Am I a filer as soon as I get my NTN?

No, and this is the single most common misunderstanding. Registration gives you an NTN and an IRIS account. You become a filer, and appear on the Active Taxpayer List, only after you file a valid income tax return for the relevant tax year.

Can I register if I have no income yet?

Yes. Students, homemakers and people between jobs register regularly, usually because they are about to buy property or a vehicle and want the filer rate. You would then file a return declaring your position, which keeps you on the ATL.

Do I need to visit an FBR office?

For a standard individual registration, no. It is completed online through IRIS. Biometric verification at a NADRA e-Sahulat centre comes into it for sales tax registration, not for an individual NTN.

What if my mobile number is registered in someone else's name?

FBR requires the number to be registered on your own CNIC, the verification will fail otherwise. Get the SIM transferred into your name at a franchise first, or use another number that is already yours. This is worth checking before you start.

Will registering mean I suddenly owe back taxes?

Registration by itself does not create a liability for past years. What it does is put you in the system, and FBR can raise a notice for a year in which it believes you were required to file. If you have earned taxable income in past years, it is far better to bring those years up to date on your own terms than to wait for a 114(4) notice.
