How it works
-
1
Residency assessment first
Before anything else we establish whether you were resident or non-resident for the tax year. Every other decision follows from this, and getting it wrong changes what is taxable.
-
2
Pakistan-source income mapped
Rent, bank profit, dividends, capital gains, we identify what Pakistan actually has the right to tax, and what it does not.
-
3
You review, from wherever you are
Full computation sent by email or WhatsApp with an explanation. We work across time zones; you do not need to be awake at 3am for a call.
-
4
Filed and confirmed
Return filed on IRIS, acknowledgement sent, ATL status confirmed once FBR updates.

Why overseas Pakistanis file at all
If you live and work in Dubai, London, Toronto or Riyadh, Pakistan does not tax your salary there. So why file? Three reasons, and they are all financial.
Property. This is the big one. Advance tax on buying and selling immovable property in Pakistan is charged at dramatically different rates depending on whether the person appears on the Active Taxpayer List. On a property transaction of any size the gap between the filer and non-filer rate runs into lakhs of rupees, routinely more than the entire cost of a decade of filing. Overseas Pakistanis buy and sell property in Lahore constantly, and turning up at the transfer with non-filer status is an expensive way to save a professional fee.
Pakistan-source income. Even as a non-resident, income arising in Pakistan is taxable in Pakistan. Rent from the house you let out in DHA. Profit on your Roshan Digital Account or a Naya Pakistan Certificate. Dividends from a Pakistani company. Capital gain when you sell a plot. Tax is usually withheld on these at source, often at the higher non-resident or non-filer rate, and without a return you cannot adjust or reclaim any of it.
Explaining your money. When you send money home to buy property or support family, that money is visible. A person with no filing history who acquires substantial Pakistani assets is a natural candidate for a notice asking where the funds came from. A filed return that shows the remittances, properly evidenced through banking channels, is the answer to that question prepared in advance.
The residency question, done properly
Everything turns on whether you were resident or non-resident for the tax year, and this is where most cheap filings go wrong. The primary test is presence in Pakistan for 183 days or more during the tax year running 1 July to 30 June. But it is not the only consideration, and the rules around Pakistani citizens who are not tax resident anywhere have shifted more than once in recent Finance Acts.
The practical consequences are large. A non-resident declares only Pakistan-source income. A resident declares worldwide income and files a wealth statement covering foreign assets too. Filing as non-resident when you were in fact resident is not a technicality, it is an understatement of income, and it is the kind of thing that surfaces years later.
So we start with your passport. Entry and exit stamps, day count, and a documented conclusion kept on file. If you are borderline, and plenty of Gulf-based Pakistanis who visit often are borderline, you should know that before you file, not after.
Roshan Digital Accounts and Naya Pakistan Certificates
RDA holders often assume the account is entirely outside the tax system because tax is deducted at source and treated as final in many cases. Partly true, and it depends on the instrument and on your residency status. What is not true is that holding an RDA removes any need to file. If you also own property, earn rent, or want ATL status for a transaction, the return is still the thing that gets you there.
Rental income from your Lahore property
If you own property in Pakistan that is let out, the rent is Pakistan-source income and taxable here. Where your tenant is a company or another withholding agent, tax is deducted under section 155 before the rent reaches you. Declaring the rent lets you claim that deduction and take the deductions you are entitled to against gross rent, repairs, property tax paid, and so on. Many overseas landlords simply absorb the withholding because they never file. That is a standing annual loss.
You do not need to come to Pakistan
Nothing about this requires your physical presence. Documents come to us on WhatsApp or email, the return is filed on IRIS, and you approve the computation from wherever you are. What we do need is your own IRIS access, the account must be in your name with your mobile and email on it, because FBR sends verification to them. If your number in Pakistan is dormant, tell us early; it is the single most common cause of delay for overseas clients.
If you have not filed for several years
This is extremely common and it is fixable. Past years can be filed, and the sooner they are, the better the position, particularly if you are about to transact in property. Where a notice has already been issued, that changes the approach and the urgency, and you should treat it as a live matter rather than an administrative one.
Double taxation agreements: paying tax in two countries
Pakistan has double taxation agreements with dozens of jurisdictions, including the UAE, the UK, the US, Canada, Saudi Arabia and most of Europe. Where the same income could be taxed in both places, rental income taxed in Pakistan while you are tax resident in the UK, for instance, the treaty allocates taxing rights and provides relief, usually as a credit for tax paid in the other country. The practical point is that treaty relief has to be claimed and evidenced, not assumed: tell us where you are tax resident and what you have paid there, and the return is prepared so the treaty position is on record. Overseas Pakistanis in the Gulf are usually in the simplest position, since most Gulf states levy no personal income tax and the question collapses to Pakistan-source income alone.
Checking your status from abroad
Everything you need to verify is visible online. The Active Taxpayer List is searchable on FBR's website by CNIC or NTN, so you can confirm your filer status from Dubai or Toronto in under a minute, and it is worth doing before agreeing any property transaction, because the buyer's side will be checking the same list at transfer. Your IRIS account shows your filed declarations and any notices issued to you; the practical constraint is that IRIS verification codes go to your registered Pakistani mobile number and email, which is why we ask overseas clients to sort out SIM access before the filing season rather than during it. If a family member in Lahore handles your affairs, we can work with them on documents while you approve the computation from wherever you are.
