How it works

  1. 1

    Category confirmed

Company, call center or freelancer, the document set and the fee differ, and applying in the wrong category means starting again.

  2. 2

    Documents assembled

We prepare the pack and tell you what is missing before it is submitted, not after PSEB queries it.

  3. 3

    Application filed

Submitted to PSEB, and any query answered on your behalf.

  4. 4

    Certificate and renewal calendar

Registration handed over with its renewal date on record.

What PSEB registration is for

The Pakistan Software Export Board is the government body for the IT and IT-enabled services sector. Registering with it identifies your business formally as part of that sector, and that identification matters in several practical places: the tax concessions available to IT exporters, how banks treat your inbound remittances, eligibility for sector schemes and delegations, and, increasingly, credibility with overseas clients running vendor checks on a Pakistani supplier.

It is not a licence in the sense that you cannot operate without it. It is closer to a sector credential, and the businesses that skip it usually end up needing it in a hurry.

Freelancers can register too

This is the part most individual freelancers do not know. PSEB has a registration category for individual freelancers, separate from the company category, with lighter requirements and a lower fee. For a Lahore-based developer, designer or writer billing clients in the US or Europe, it is one of the cheaper things you can do to formalise your position, and it sits naturally alongside NTN registration and filing a return.

The combination that works for a serious freelancer is: registered with FBR, filing returns, receiving payments through the banking channel, and PSEB registered. That set of four turns "I do some work online" into a documented professional position that stands up to a bank, a tax notice, or a visa application.

The remittance connection

The concessional tax treatment for exported IT services depends on export proceeds arriving in Pakistan through proper banking channels with the remittance evidence retained. PSEB registration sits alongside this, and banks are generally more comfortable processing and correctly coding IT export remittances for a registered entity. If your money is arriving through a personal wallet or informal channels, PSEB registration alone will not fix the tax position; the banking has to be right too.

Call centers

Call centers are a distinct PSEB category with their own requirements, reflecting the premises, seat capacity and telecom arrangements that voice operations involve. If your business handles international voice traffic, expect the application to ask about the operational setup rather than just the corporate documents.

Renewal

PSEB registration is renewed periodically rather than granted once forever. Lapsed registrations are a routine problem, a company registers in year one, never diarises the renewal, and discovers the lapse when a bank or a client asks for a current certificate. We record the renewal date at registration and remind you before it.

The registration set that makes an IT business complete

PSEB rarely travels alone, and knowing the full map saves applying twice. A software house typically ends up holding: SECP incorporation, the company NTN, PSEB registration, a bank account coded for IT export remittances, and, the one that surprises people, PRA registration the moment any client is domestic, because services supplied in Punjab sit in the provincial net regardless of what your export side does. A freelancer's version is shorter: NTN, filed returns, banking-channel remittances, and the PSEB freelancer category. In both cases the pieces reinforce each other, the bank codes remittances more readily for a PSEB-registered entity, the tax concession leans on the coded remittances, and the PSEB renewal leans on the tax filings. We set the whole chain up in one pass rather than registration by registration.

What the application actually gets examined on

PSEB's review is documentary, and the applications that sail through share a shape: the corporate documents internally consistent (same name, same address, same directors everywhere), the bank maintenance certificate matching the entity applying, the service description specific enough to classify, "custom software development and ITeS for overseas clients" rather than "IT work", and, where export history exists, remittance evidence that ties to the claimed revenue. Queries almost always target an inconsistency between two of your own documents rather than anything exotic. Our preparation is mostly the unglamorous work of making the file agree with itself before it is submitted.

Frequently asked questions

Is PSEB registration compulsory for an IT company?

You can operate without it, but it is the sector's identifying registration and it interacts with the export tax concessions, bank handling of your remittances and access to sector schemes. Most established software houses hold it.

Can a freelancer register with PSEB?

Yes, there is a separate freelancer category with lighter requirements and a lower fee than the company category. For a freelancer billing overseas clients it is one of the cheapest ways to formalise your position.

What tax benefit does PSEB registration give?

It supports your position within the IT and IT-enabled services export regime, but the concessions themselves depend chiefly on proceeds arriving through proper banking channels with remittance evidence. Registration alone does not create the benefit; it is part of a picture that also has to include how you get paid.

How long does PSEB registration take?

Typically one to three weeks, depending on category and how complete the document set is at submission. Queries from PSEB on an incomplete application are the usual cause of delay.

Does the registration expire?

Yes, it is renewed periodically. Lapsed registrations are common because nobody diarises the date. We record it and remind you.

Do I need a company, or can I register as an individual?

Both routes exist. Individual freelancers register in the freelancer category; software houses and call centers register as companies with the corresponding documentation.
